Lately we've been discussing the different branches of science and why they are important. With our look at environmental education, we've taken a closer glance at an important issue known as biodiversity. As discussed in class, biodiversity involves a variety of living organisms which include diversity of genes, diversity of species, and diversity of ecosystems. Diversity of genes occurs within all living things. We have also discussed diversity of species. For example, humans, praying mantis and rainbow trout are different types of species. Examples of diversity of ecosystems would include wetlands, forests, and prairies. Biodiversity is important because it supports our health, economies and the environment.
To help you better understand biodiversity, I would like for you to take "A walk through the woods". As you experience this tour you will learn of the many different plant and animal life that exists in the woods and how they coexist in the environment. This will also give you a better understanding about why environmental education is such an important branch of science and why people choose to study it. You may even want to become someone who studies in this area one day!!!!!
At the end of the tour I would like for you to comment on the following questions.
1. What are some of the insects that existed on the tour?
2. Describe the difference between Poison Ivy, Virginia creeper, and Jack in the Pulpit?
3. Do you believe that we should preserve this type of environment? List 2 points to support your answer.
